What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships refer to on-the-job training leading to nationally recognised qualifications. The length of the programme varies depending on the course level and the experience you already have in your job role. An Apprenticeship is essentially a set of qualifications called a ‘framework’ developed by Sector Skills Councils.

Most Apprenticeship frameworks follow a standard format that comprises:

Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF)
This is the competence based element of the framework which describes what you are expected to do within your particular occupation to be deemed ‘competent’. It is a portfolio made up of evidence that proves you have the skills to do your job effectively.

Technical Certificate
This is the knowledge based part of the course that underpins the QCF competencies. This takes the form of assignments and/or exams that prove you know and understand why the skills required for your job are important.

Key Skills
Key ‘transferable’ Skills are a range of essential generic skills that underpin success in education, employment, lifelong learning and personal development and are relevant both to young people and adult learners. They are either at level 1 or 2 and in many cases the learner is exempt from these skills if they have a reasonable GCSE grade in English and Maths. Evidence for these skills is easily identified in daily working practice and is generally not difficult to achieve.

Employer Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
Each framework must include a requirement for Apprentices to develop knowledge and understanding about the world of employment, including the rights and responsibilities of workers, the role of their organisation within the wider industry, the effect of public law and policy on industry and the role of the safe learner concept.

Who are they for?
Apprenticeships are open to all ages over 16, whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a new career. You need to have been a resident in the EU for three years and not be in full time education.

What are the benefits of being an Apprentice?
You'll get recognised qualifications and full support during your training. You will also be earning a wage while you learn, and will have access to a higher qualification at the end leading to better performance at work, improved personal development and career prospects.
